MacDiarmid started her political career advocating for everything from an EI family to recent citizens of Canada when she joined the British Columbia Medical Association. She won the general provincial election in 2009 and was appointed as the Minister of Education and Minister Responsible for Early Learning and Literacy in June of the same year.

While her position focuses much of her work, MacDiarmid is actually passionate about many different issues affecting British Columbian residents. Health care has of course always been a priority of hers but she also gives as much time as possible to building a strong provincial economy, creating a workable infrastructure for the biggest cities, and supporting those in need. This means advocating for businesses that can compete with the top Ontario commercial real estate, working for additional funding for education, and making sure citizens are safe and well cared for.
